I believe that honest dialog always results in a win-win situation. Here is how I would break it down: 1. Both parties agree - this helps both people understand their beliefs from a different angle. 2. Parties disagree - this gives both an opportunity to discuss, debate and explore their opinions even more 3. They disagree to begin with and change opinions mid-conversation - this is learning, this is advancement! Who is losing out here? |

Let me play the devil's advocate here and state that the goal of parties disagreeing is not to broaden their own understanding and see the problem from a different angle, rather, it is to force their own opinion/point of view on the disagreeing party. Under this prism, neither party will be satisfied unless there is a win/lose situation. Again, I believe it only matters (to me) the way that I would handle a debate, since I will never be in a debate that I am not part of. =) So. Since the most important part of the debate to me is the sharing, comparing and understanding of ideas, testing the validity of your own beliefs against an opposing belief of another, I don't really see a right/wrong person. http://yourmind.makes.it |
