Owain Glyndwr’s descendants I am sure most people here realise the significance and historical setting of Owain Glyndwr. At the close of the previous decade he was listed in a national Sunday newspaper’s poll of the most important people of the last millennium, coming above both Galileo and Newton, and is recognised in Wales as an emblem of nationalism. Owain Glyndwr was far above being just a medieval firebrand, however, and is remembered by many people because of the potential in his revolt. The English Crown, of course, inevitably quashed Owain Glyndwr’s success and he disappeared into Welsh myth without any direct political legacy. History does show him with children, however, and so this proves a physical legacy. It is quite well known that there are well-established and modern families descended from Glyndwr, but all of these are related through his many daughters’ lineages and are not directly related. However, Maredudd Glyndwr, Owain’s son and chosen successor, survived on his own reputation throughout the turbulent period of history he lived in and even thrived after the Welsh rebellion of the early 1400’s. What happened to Maredudd Glyndwr or his descendants, though? We know the history and descendants of Owain Glyndwr’s daughters, yet nothing of his heir, successor and son. Maredudd Glyndwr accepted a pardon from Henry V in 1421 and proceeded to establish himself in normalised English life, so surely his descendants (if there were any) would have been well documented. Does anyone know what happened to Maredudd Glyndwr or his descendants at all? After all, they would be direct descendants. Diolch yn fawr. Thank you. Cymdeithas
